SCCM 2007: WSUS DB maintenance

For a while now the synchronization of updates which are initiated by SCCM via WSUS are terribly slow. It takes hours and hours after SCCM is ready to deploy new updates to the clients caused by a WSUS databases of which the last maintenance job was run probably after the installation a few years ago.

First thing to do is removing the superseeded updates from the database.

Open the WSUS console and expand Updates > All Updates.

Right-click the column headers and select Supercedence.

After the colom is visible click twice on the column title to sort the updates by supersedence and select all updates that apply. After the selection had made, right-click and select Decline.

In the WSUS administration console, select Options, and then Server Cleanup Wizard. In the next window you can choose what you like to cleanup, well....everything you would think. Not in this case.

If you didn't run the cleanup for a long time its better to check and run the options one by one.
The cleanup can be automated with a powershell script that can be scheduled to run periodicly.

[reflection.assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration")`
| out-null
$wsus = [Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.AdminProxy]::GetUpdateServer();
$cleanupScope = new-object Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.CleanupScope;
$cleanupScope.DeclineSupersededUpdates = $true
$cleanupScope.DeclineExpiredUpdates         = $true
$cleanupScope.CleanupObsoleteUpdates     = $true
$cleanupScope.CompressUpdates                  = $true
#$cleanupScope.CleanupObsoleteComputers = $true
$cleanupScope.CleanupUnneededContentFiles = $true
$cleanupManager = $wsus.GetCleanupManager();
$cleanupManager.PerformCleanup($cleanupScope);

 If powershell comes up with a message that execution of scripts is disabled on this system then change

Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

After WSUS had been cleaned up it's time to reindex the WSUS database, this can be done with the next SQL script:

/******************************************************************************
This sample T-SQL script performs basic maintenance tasks on SUSDB
1. Identifies indexes that are fragmented and defragments them. For certain
   tables, a fill-factor is set in order to improve insert performance.
   Based on MSDN sample at
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188917.aspx
   and tailored for SUSDB requirements
2. Updates potentially out-of-date table statistics.

 This also can be automated with a scheduled task. I run both maintenance tasks once a month.
